The first-ever bursary program created specifically for South African youth of Portuguese descent
🎯 Making History
Inspired by the resilience of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, we're pioneering educational support for our Portuguese community in South Africa.
The Portuguese community in South Africa represents one of the country's most vibrant immigrant groups, with roots dating back to the 15th century when Portuguese explorers first reached our shores. Today, over 300,000 South Africans claim Portuguese descent, making us one of the largest Portuguese diaspora communities globally.
Our community has contributed significantly to South Africa's economic and cultural landscape, particularly in sectors like fishing, agriculture, hospitality, and entrepreneurship. However, despite our strong work ethic and family values, many Portuguese families face unique challenges in accessing higher education.
South Africans with Portuguese heritage, making us one of the largest Portuguese diaspora communities worldwide.
Many Portuguese youth are first-generation university students, facing unique barriers to higher education access.
Camino Bursary is the first-ever dedicated bursary program for Portuguese youth in South Africa.
Camino Bursary exists to open doors to higher education for young South Africans of Portuguese descent. Inspired by the spirit of the Camino de Santiago—resilience, perseverance, community—we support students who have the potential to change their lives and uplift our broader Portuguese community in South Africa.
Founded in 2025 by Dominic Pais (Chairperson & Founder) with Dinarte Menezes (Business Developer) and Gilberto Martins (Financial Director), we operate as a South African Non-Profit Company focused on transparent governance, ethical selection, and measurable impact.
We comply with POPIA and maintain robust controls to protect applicant data and prevent conflicts of interest. Our community partners include Eplesy South Africa and Yaps, helping us extend student support networks beyond funding.
Many South African youth of Portuguese descent are first-generation university students; even modest fees and living costs become hard barriers to accessing higher education.
Talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. Without targeted support, capable students often pivot away from studies to short-term work, undercutting long-term earning potential and community advancement.
Our community values—família, trabalho, solidariedade—call us to formalize the help that many families already give informally, ensuring fairness, accountability, and scale.
Build a sustainable pipeline of graduates who return value to the community through leadership, entrepreneurship, and service.
Translate the Camino ethos—step by step, with purpose—into a structured bursary program that equips students not just with fees, but with mentorship, psychosocial support, and career pathways.
Create a virtuous cycle where successful graduates mentor new cohorts, strengthening our community's educational foundation for generations to come.
